When a recruiter at Florida Air National Guard headquarters in Naples, Florida, calls you and asks for your resume, she asks about your military experience and whether you are interested in working for the Air Force.
“Do you want to do the Air National Guards job?” she asks.
“That’s all we need,” you say.
A recruiter then tells you she can send you a form to fill out to complete the job application.
“This is really important for us to get to know you,” says the recruiter.
“You will be a great asset to our team.”
It’s the job of recruiter Holly M. Sturgis, of Sturgiss Associates, to fill in the application for you.
Sturdgs says there are a number of steps you should take to get a job with the Air Guard.
First, recruiters need to know where you live, what kind of job you are looking for, what you like to do and what skills you have.
Second, recruitiers must know where your family lives and the types of people they work with.
“I have a very busy life, and my husband works in the military,” she says.
“We have a family, and I have a couple of kids.
We do the same thing.”
But if you’re an average person, Sturgess says, “You need to put your best foot forward.”
The recruiter also needs to know what kind and quantity of work you’re interested in.
She wants you to be able to tell her about the type of work that you do.
“It will help her assess if it’s the type that she wants or if it is just a part-time job,” she explains.
“What do you do when you get home?
How much do you sleep?
How often do you have breakfast?”
And she wants you answer these questions as quickly as possible.
“If you have any questions that you would like to ask, feel free to ask,” she advises.
“Ask a recruitter for more information.
We are looking forward to working with you.”
In other words, don’t just say “I want to work for the air force” and hope that recruiter will do the work for you, she says, because you can always contact her.
When you get the job offer, recruit your recruiter to get you an interview.
If you don’t, it’s time to take action.
“There is a lot of work for us that goes into our recruitment process,” says Sturgises chief recruiter Mary C. Rauh, who also works for the Florida Air Guard as an associate recruiter and recruiter-manager.
“So if you are not interested in this job, it is important to contact us and see if you can work for them.”
Before you apply, ask your recruister what your job responsibilities are, such as what kind or amount of work is needed.
“As an individual, it really depends on what type of experience you have,” says Rauhe.
You should also get an understanding of what kind-of-job you want and what type-of experience you will need to do that job.
Then, start filling out the job applications, including questions about your training, skills and experience.
After that, recruit the right recruiter for you to get the interview you are expecting.
Follow the job-hunting tips that Rauhes and other recruiter specialists have shared to get yourself hired in the right job.
